Krishna and Christ, one being: macrocosm and microcosm: mystic experience
excerpted from OM, baby! a pilgrimage to the eternal self, by Jack Haas
As well as enjoying the inebriating qualities of the spirit penetrating the flesh in Rishikesh, I was also given a profound awareness of the flesh rising into the spirit.
This came about over the course of many days, and in fact had begun perhaps six months earlier, when, sitting alone in a deep inner peace within my inner-city hermitage in Vancouver, I unexpectedly encountered Krishna's vast space behind my manifested being. This was a tremendously unexpected yet lucid awakening. I say unexpected because I had never paid much attention to the Hindu pantheon, and had only read the Bhagavad Gita and a few smaller Hindu scriptures, and I had no thought whatsoever that I was connected to Krishna. And yet there He was, indisputably, in the great deep space behind my manifested being. Which is to say- my greater 'I' awoke as Krishna.
This event made me realize that Krishna was the immense, unmanifest, macrocosmic consciousness behind my being, and Christ was the operational, microcosmic expression of that consciousness.
That inaugural experience six months earlier wore off and drifted into a distant memory for the next while, as I returned to my more limited worldly consciousness which occupied my day-to-day awareness. Then all of the sudden the same awakening returned again in Rishikesh, and I immediately realized this time that Christ and Krishna were the very same being, and that Krishna was my greater, unconditioned self, and my defined and corporeal being was the Christ of that Krishna.
In this way Krishna is my infinite being, and Christ is the finite manifestation of that infinity. And so Krishna is the Great Self of the Christ self, which are one within me.
I realized that both Krishna and Christ are aspects of a singular continuity and, therefore, by becoming both I become transpersonal and personal, which is to be the ocean and the drop.
This revelation may come as some hard or unbelievable news to orthodox religion mongers, but then they will also find it impossible to swallow the fact that the names Krishna and Christ are significantly similar, denoting a cosmic connection between these beings. And furthermore, the Christianity/Hindu commingling does not stop here, for one of Shiva's lesser known names is Isa, which is uniquely close to Issa, the name for Christ in the East.
I now understand why I had so many dreams in the past in which Christ was shown with dreadlocks, which is exactly the image given to Shiva in India.
I suppose this also accounts for the many times in the past when I would sit still and smoke cannabis, which is what Shiva had done for a mere five-thousand years.
I know now that Krishna is Christ is Issa is Isa is Shiva. Different names for the same cosmic spirit, received in different ways by different cultures during different epochs, but the same eternal great soul nonetheless.
I make this claim categorically, because Krishna states unequivocally in the Uddhava Gita that those devoted to him he "…carries across to liberation." The only thing is this- prior to receiving this liberating consciousness, in which I recognized that Krishna was the great macrocosmic space behind my eyes, I was in no way devoted to Krishna; I was devoted only to Christ. But now I know that since Krishna and Christ are the same spirit- one macrocosmic, the other microcosmic, but both aspects of the same being working on the same project of human liberation- to be devoted to one is to be devoted to both, for there is no division, only a logarithmic multiplication of spiritual expansion, in which Christ is the Krishna of this dimension, and Krishna is the infinity of that being radiating out into every dimension, which is the Cosmic Christ.
As my awareness and receptivity increased I became united still further into the incredible space which is Krishna-consciousness, deep inside the cosmic recesses, which then came pouring forth into the Christ flesh of my body.
I became the great, eternal, cosmic ocean of Self which is boundless space, and the unique, immanent incarnation which is form.
The whole panapoly and chaos now merged into a singular vastness where peace and effortlessness hold sway- a great, reactionless, all-encompassing, ethereal ocean- and I was that ocean called Krishna, and I was the wave called Christ, and they were one.
The ocean of the great consciousness could then pour forth, from the infinite into the finite, from the macrocosm into the microcosm. The KrishnaChrist was complete. The self and the Self, the formed and the formless, the cosmic and the corporeal were one. Om, baby!
I realized only after this experience why the actor Harrison Ford had been showing up unexpectedly in my dreams, as many characters often did. I remembered that most often celebrities or people I knew arrived in the theater of my dreams simply because their name became symbolic of something that name was representing, and the actual person had nothing whatsoever to do with the dream. In this case it became clear to me that Harrison was Hari-son (Hari is a name for Vishnu, of whom Krishna was an incarnation. The 'son' is the Christ). Ah but the subconscious is a wise and wily teacher.
