The Sri Yantra: the visual symbol of om, and yantra mandala of Lakshmi
Traditional Sri Yantra
The Sri Yantra has been known since the Vedic times as the most powerful and mystically beautiful of all yantras, or geometric mandalas. It represents the timeless creative principle of the universe, the continuous unfoldment of all realms of creation from the central source, and with that mindfulness, it is used as an object of meditation. The central point, called bindu, represents transcendental unity and the source of creation. The opposing sets of triangles represent the male and female principles which form creation, themselves being recognized as expressions of the polarity inherent in the creative force of the bindu. The surrounding geometries represent the realms of creation, entirely supported by the creative process, and which would have no reality whatsoever without the omnipresence of the transcendental source. The sri yantra consists of nine interwoven isosceles triangles: four point upwards, representing Sakti, the primordial female essence of dynamic energy, and five point downwards, representing Siva, the primordial male essence of static wisdom The triangles are arranged in such a way that they produce 43 subsidiary triangles, at the centre of the smallest of which there is a big dot (known as the bindu). (George Joseph)
The Sri Yantra is the visual expression of the sound of om. This pattern is seen in deep contemplation by monks chanting the om. It has also been recorded electronically as a pattern which emerges during the sound of om. This is the appearance of the Om mantra spoken into an electronic transmitter (from Ajit Mookerjee)

'Sri' is a name for the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. Thus the Sri Yantra is a direct expression of Lakshmi's divine being. She is the power of "Lord Narayana" who is also known as Lord Vishnu or Lord Hari. Narayana is God's aspect of preservation. Lakshmi is His causal body.
